A hundred years ago | The golden car festival at Tuticorin

Tuticorin, July 21: The Golden Car Festival of our Lady of Snows will be celebrated this year on the 5th of August. It will be a great occasion in Tuticorin, especially because this festival comes after a lapse of nearly two decades. The Church of our Lady of Snows is one of the few churches in Southern India which can be legitimately called historical. The immense popularity which it has gained not only among Catholics but, strange to say, also among Hindus and other non-Catholics, is due to the miraculous statue which it enshrines as also to its always being associated with the name of St. Francis Xavier, at whose intercession the miraculous statue was presented to the Church by the Spanish Convent nuns at Manila in the year 1555. The magnificent car which will be drawn through all the principal streets in Tuticorin is very huge in dimension, 50 ft, in height and gold gilt all over.
