For many families, the first reaction is to buy an antibiotic from a nearby pharmacy or use leftover medicines from a previous illness.While this may seem like a quick solution, it is one of the biggest reasons antibiotic resistance is becoming a serious public health threat.The first thing to understand is that fever is a symptom, not a disease. It is the body's natural response to an infection or inflammation. Fever can be caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, autoimmune diseases, and even certain medications. Treating every fever with an antibiotic is like trying to fix every vehicle problem by changing the engine-it simply does not make sense.Most fevers are caused by viral infections, such as the common cold, influenza, COVID-19, or viral gastroenteritis. Antibiotics have no effect on viruses. In these cases, the body usually recovers with adequate rest, fluids, good nutrition, and medicines that relieve symptoms, such as paracetamol for fever when appropriate.Antibiotics are effective only against bacterial infections. Even then, the choice of antibiotic depends on the type of bacteria, the site of infection, the patient's age, allergies, kidney and liver function, and local resistance patterns. This is why doctors sometimes advise simple supportive care instead of immediately prescribing antibiotics. It is not because the illness is being ignored-it is because the antibiotic would not help and could actually cause harm.Using antibiotics unnecessarily can lead to several problems. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, allergic reactions, and skin rashes. More importantly, repeated misuse allows bacteria to adapt and become resistant. Once resistance develops, infections that were once easily treatable may require stronger, more expensive medicines or even hospitalization.Antibiotic resistance is no longer a distant concern. It affects people every day. Resistant bacteria can make routine infections difficult to treat and increase the risk of complications after surgeries, childbirth, cancer treatment, and organ transplantation. If antibiotics continue to be misused, we risk returning to an era when simple bacterial infections could once again become life-threatening.Another common mistake is stopping antibiotics as soon as the patient feels better or saving the remaining tablets for future use. Antibiotics should be taken exactly as prescribed by a qualified medical practitioner.Changing the dose, skipping tablets, or sharing medicines with family members can reduce treatment success and contribute to resistance.So, what should you do if you develop a fever?Stay hydrated, rest adequately, and monitor your temperature. If advised by a healthcare professional, use paracetamol to reduce discomfort. Seek medical attention if the fever lasts more than two to three days, is very high, is associated with difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, confusion, seizures, a widespread rash, or if it occurs in infants, elderly individuals, pregnant women, or people with weakened immunity.As patients, we also have an important role. Do not pressure your doctor to prescribe antibiotics "just to be safe." Responsible doctors prescribe antibiotics only when they are likely to provide real benefit. Sometimes, the best treatment is careful observation, symptom relief, and allowing the body's immune system to do its job.Antibiotics have saved millions of lives since their discovery, but they are a precious resource that must be used wisely. Every unnecessary antibiotic taken today makes it a little harder to treat serious bacterial infections tomorrow.The next time you or a loved one develops a fever, remember this simple message: Not every fever needs an antibiotic, but every antibiotic should have a good reason. Using these medicines responsibly protects not only your own health but also the health of your family and future generations.
