Armadale man faces charges after woman killed in fiery crash on Tonkin Highway in Martin

A driver allegedly fled police before slamming head-on into another vehicle, killing a 30-year-old woman in a fiery crash on Tonkin Highway. WA Police allege the driver had dangerously evaded officers earlier in the evening before the fatal collision in Martin. A 38-year-old Armadale man has now been charged with manslaughter, dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm, contravening a 24-hour driving prohibition, reckless driving to escape pursuit by police and failing to comply with a direction to stop under circumstances of aggravation. He is due to face Perth Magistrates Court on Sunday via a bedside hearing from hospital. The horror crash happened at the intersection of Tonkin Highway and Mills Road West about 10.45pm on Friday. A white Toyota LandCruiser allegedly collided head-on with a white Toyota Hilux, with the impact so severe one of the vehicles burst into flames. A 30-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Hilux, suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital, where she later died. The 33-year-old driver of the Hilux was seriously injured and taken to Armadale Hospital. The accused, who was driving the LandCruiser, was also taken to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment. The crash sparked a major emergency response, with police closing the northbound lanes of Tonkin Highway between Albany Highway and Gosnells Road West for several hours while firefighters extinguished the blaze and Major Crash investigators examined the scene. The closure remained in place into Saturday morning, causing significant traffic delays.
