Boko Haram Releases Obituary for Killed Cameraman

Boko Haram has released an obituary for one of its videographers and cameramen, identified as Abu Salim al-Barnawi, who was killed by Nigerian troops during an attempted raid on a military camp. The three-minute, three-second video, obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday, is narrated in Arabic and shows the young fighter, Abu Salim al-Barnawi, operating a camera and participating in various operations carried out by the terrorist group. The Acting Military Information Officer, North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Muhammed Goni, who shared the video, said the terrorist had previously led raids into Cameroon before joining the group’s media wing. The text accompanying the video reads, “Boko Haram terrorist has put out an obituary of a dead raid commander and videographer, Abu Salim al-Barnawi.” It added, “He was smoked last week by the Nigerian Army when the terrorist group attacked a Nigerian military camp. He was the cameraman. He previously led raids into Cameroon before joining the media wing of the terrorist group.” On July 12, PUNCH Online reported that troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralised an Islamic State West Africa Province cameraman and recovered video materials indicating the presence of three foreign facilitators, including a Palestinian Arab identified as a trainer and a Moroccan Arab serving as a medical doctor for the terrorist group in Borno State. Goni, who disclosed this in a statement, said the operational success followed a failed infiltration attempt by ISWAP terrorists into Cross Kauwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of the state. Goni said the terrorists attempted to exploit the cover of darkness to breach the troops’ position and loot cholera medical supplies. The army spokesman added that troops recovered a Sony camcorder, several rounds of PKT and 7.62mm Special ammunition, terrorist uniforms and other combat items during the operation.
