Cauvery’s tapas

A Gandharva named Vishvavasu once worshipped all the sacred rivers. There arose a quarrel between Cauvery and Ganga, as to which of them was superior. They asked Brahma his opinion. Brahma ruled in favour of Ganga, said Therazhundur Gosakan Bhattachariar in a discourse. He said Ganga had washed the feet of Vishnu during His Trivikrama avatara, and was therefore more sacred than Cauvery. Hurt by Brahma’s judgment, Cauvery asked him what she should do to gain a status equal to that of Ganga. Brahma advised her to perform tapas on the banks of the Sara Pushkarini. This pushkarini is in a place called Thiruccherai in Tamil Nadu. Cauvery did tapas on the banks of the pushkarini.
