Critically injured cyclist remains in hospital after Epsom rampage

The teenage cyclist who was critically injured in an <a href="https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/08/05/auckland-grammar-cyclists-injured-dog-killed-in-epsom-rampage/">Epsom rampage</a> earlier this week remains in hospital. On Wednesday, the Auckland community was thrown into chaos following a series of violent events which unfolded shortly after 7am. The incident left a woman assaulted, three teenage cyclists injured and a dog killed. All three cyclists were teenage boys from Auckland Grammar. They were hospitalised in critical, serious and moderate conditions. Yesterday, 1News reported two of the boys <a href="https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/08/06/epsom-rampage-carjacking-victim-says-attacker-completely-nonsensical-erratic/">had been discharged</a> from hospital. Today, police said the boy who was critically injured remains in hospital. The family of the critically injured boy asked for privacy. A 49-year-old man facing 17 charges relating to the event <a href="https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/08/06/seymour-violent-rampage-leaves-epsom-community-touched-by-tragedy/">remained in Auckland City Hospital</a> overnight under police guard. He was initially expected to appear in court yesterday, which has since been rescheduled. The charges he is facing include: two charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; two charges of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; five counts of assault with a weapon, two charges of failing to stop and ascertain injury; wilful ill treatment of an animal; two counts of dangerous driving; unlawful taking of a motor vehicle; attempted unlawful taking; and aggravated assault or resisting. The day after the incident, the woman who was assaulted spoke to 1News and described the accused man's behaviour as "completely nonsensical and erratic". "I hope he receives the treatment he needs," she said. "Furthermore, I hope this prompts inquiry into the wider needs of the underfunded mental health system. They need adequate resourcing to look after the most vulnerable and implement strategies to help prevent future catastrophes."
