DCI launches probe into alleged abduction of businessman Jimmy Mutava in Mlolongo

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Anti-Abduction Unit have launched investigations into the reported disappearance of businessman Jimmy Mutava. According to the DCI, Mutava’s disappearance was reported on July 27, 2026, at Mlolongo Police Station. A CCTV footage reviewed recently showed armed men forcing him into a waiting vehicle in Mlolongo, Machakos County, shortly after he had met a senior police officer attached to Mlolongo Police Station. The DCI said detectives are pursuing several persons of interest as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported incident. “The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) wishes to inform the public that detectives from the DCI Anti-Abduction Unit have taken over investigations into the reported alleged abduction of Jimmy Mutava, following a report made at Mlolongo Police Station on 27th July 2026,” the detectives said in a statement on Sunday. “Investigations are currently underway, with detectives pursuing several persons of interest as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported incident. The DCI will keep the public informed of significant developments as the investigations progress.” The agency has appealed to anyone with information that could help with the investigations to share it confidentially through the toll-free Fichua Kwa DCI number 0800 722 203 or a WhatsApp message to 0709 570 000. “All reports will be treated with strict confidence,” it said. The investigations come as Mutava’s family continues to demand answers from the government over his whereabouts after he disappeared under unclear circumstances on Monday night in Mlolongo. According to the family, Mutava had gone to meet a senior police officer after receiving a phone call requesting the meeting. “Mida kama saa kumi na moja hivi ndio tulipata simu kutoka kwa OCS Mlolongo. Hours later, CCTV footage captured Mutava standing outside an entertainment joint while speaking on the phone with a friend. The friend, who remained on the call, said it was their final conversation. Audio from the call captured a sudden commotion, with voices heard shouting before the line remained open as Mutava was allegedly dragged away. At exactly 8:22 pm, another CCTV camera recorded what appeared to be a coordinated operation, showing four men emerging from a double-cabin pickup and allegedly forcing Mutava into the vehicle. One of the men appeared to be carrying a rifle, while another was seen holding what looked like a pistol. Additional CCTV footage reviewed by the family showed the same pickup truck parked a few metres from the entertainment joint where Mutava had reportedly met the police officer. Earlier recordings also captured the vehicle moving through different locations within Mlolongo before the alleged abduction. The incident was reported at Mlolongo Police Station. However, the family says no police station has confirmed holding Mutava in custody, and they have not received any information about his whereabouts. Phone data reviewed by the family allegedly shows that Mutava’s mobile phone last transmitted a signal along Kamiti Road at about 11:00 pm, nearly three hours after he was captured on CCTV being forced into the vehicle. The businessman had reportedly lodged a complaint with police on June 10, alleging that members of his community were being attacked by unknown individuals accompanied by police officers in connection with an ongoing land dispute. His family now fears that the complaint and his disappearance could be linked, although authorities have not provided evidence confirming such a connection.
