Devon church issues Ann Widdecombe funeral statement as plans still being determined

The funeral of former MP Ann Widdecombe is still being prepared following her death on July 8 and her family are working with Buckfast Abbey, where she worshipped. A statement released by Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community of Buckfast has said that they "continue to hold Ann Widdecombe, her family and loved ones in our prayers during this difficult time". Joshua Kerry, a 28-year-old from Rotherham, South Yorkshire has been charged with Ann's murder and has appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court charged with her murder. He has been remanded into custody and will next appear at the Old Bailey on October 9. A provisional trial date has been listed for June 8, 2027. Following her passing Buckfast Abbey - situated on the edge of Dartmoor National Park - issued a statement saying the Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community of Buckfast were "deeply saddened to hear of the death of Ann Widdecombe in such tragic and disturbing circumstances". They explained that Ann was a frequent worshipper in the Abbey Church, attending the Sunday Solemn Mass as well as the church's Holy Week and Easter services. They added: "Many in our worshipping community knew her as a kind and warm character. She will be missed and fondly remembered. "Ann was a woman of profound faith, a faith which found expression in the public forum of politics. "Ann was unafraid to express her unwavering convictions, formed through her Roman Catholic faith. "She had a sharp intellect and was a dedicated public servant. Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community extend their heartfelt condolences to her family and friends." In a statement released today to the media, Fr Abbot said the church was working "closely with the family regarding funeral arrangements" and would provide more information "in due course, when appropriate". Fr Abbot and the Monastic Community said they were "grateful for the many messages of sympathy and support that have been received." Buckfast Abbey is home to a community of Roman Catholic Benedictine Monks, who live their lives according to the ancient rule of St Benedict. The site is of historical importance - the original Abbey being founded in 1018 AD, by King Cnut and welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
