Europe found a clever new job for dead wind turbines, and the US is copying it
Researchers are repurposing decommissioned wind turbine blades into structural girders for pedestrian bridges to solve the problem of non-recyclable fiberglass waste. This initiative, which began in Ireland, is now being implemented in the United States to reduce landfill impact.
Wind energy has always carried an awkward secret. The turbine blades that spin cleanly for two decades are a nightmare to get rid of once they stop. They're built from reinforced fiberglass, which resists recycling in a way the rest of the turbine doesn't—roughly 90% of a wind turbine is recyclable, according to the US Department of Energy, but the blades keep landing on the wrong side of that number.That gap has handed critics of wind power an easy talking point for years. Now a fix that took shape in Ireland back in 2019 is quietly answering it, and it's showing up on American soil. In early 2022 the network unveiled its first working bridge in Cork, built from two retired blades, with the tips buried underground for support.By 2025 the idea crossed the Atlantic. A blade decommissioned in Colorado became a bridge near Atlanta, spanning a difficult creek to open up a previously unreachable stretch of a park. The team behind it called the project a reuse rather than a recycling job.Wind turbine blade waste is a problem that keeps growingThe timing matters. The US is projected to face 2 million tons of blade waste by 2050, while Europe's figure sits closer to 7.6 million tons. Europe alone will have more than 40,000 turbines needing decommissioning by 2030, and over 80,000 by 2040.Before the first Irish bridge went up, researchers tested each blade's strength, load-bearing capacity, and compression, then ran computational models to confirm it was safe.
