Expect jams on Rīga-Liepāja highway this weekend

Some visitors will set off as early as Thursday, 30 July, but the majority will travel to Liepāja on Friday, 31 July, and return on Sunday, 2 August. As a result, drivers should expect the road to Liepāja to be busy this weekend and must take extra care. As is the case every summer, drivers should also be particularly aware of roadworks on the Liepāja highway this year. You can find out about the current roadworks on the Latvian State Roads map. The CSDD and “Summer Sound” therefore urge you to set off in good time and allow for extra time, rather than trying to make up for lost time by driving faster. “The Liepāja Highway has specific characteristics – near Rīga, the road is relatively straight, but as you get closer to Liepāja, it begins to wind round after round, which makes overtaking significantly more difficult and risky. Don’t rush, don’t take risks, and only overtake when you have a clear view of the road and there really is no one in the way. If in doubt, don’t overtake,” emphasises CSDD road safety expert Oskars Irbītis.
