Google's 30th employee Jeff Dean shows what he returned on his last day after 27 years

Jeff Dean's final act as a Google employee was a photograph. On Friday, the man who joined the company as employee number 30 in 1999 posted a picture of the two things he surrendered on his way out the door: a scuffed black Google laptop, and the plastic-sleeved badge with his face on it, still marked FTE. The caption ran to three words.The post has since crossed 2.8 million views, which tells you something about how closely the industry has been watching this particular exit. It comes days after Google announced a sweeping AI leadership reshuffle that moved Demis Hassabis out of the Google DeepMind CEO role and into a chair position, with CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu stepping up as SVP. Dean is leaving alongside Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le to co-found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation backed by Alphabet, Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures.The stickers on Jeff Dean's laptop are a working history of Google AIThe laptop is the better artefact, and it appears to be a Chromebook, a modest daily driver for the man who built Google's AI infrastructure. Its lid carries a rainbow-sliced anatomical brain, the old Google Brain logo, a TensorFlow decal, a sticker from something called the Optic Nerve 2020 Summit, a tiny Android figure, and a hand-drawn cartoon of a very large table with the words "BIG TABLE" scrawled underneath.Dean co-created BigTable. Nearly every sticker on that lid is a thing he built, which is either charming or slightly unhinged depending on your view of engineer merch.When one user asked whether he had really kept the same machine for six years, Dean replied that he thought so, maybe five. That badge is now in a photograph.Dean will be CEO at Discovery Loop, which plans to automate the experimental loop itself, running thousands of AI-designed experiments in parallel across machine learning, chip design and drug discovery.
