Voters in Greater Manchester are heading to the polls to elect a new mayor following the departure of Andy Burnham, who recently became the UK Prime Minister. Seven candidates are vying for the position, with results expected on Friday.
Thousands of people across Greater Manchester have cast their vote to select the region's next mayor . Voters across all ten boroughs had the opportunity to have their say on who takes the region's top political job today (Thursday, July 30). The mayor has a direct say over setting budgets and priorities for Greater Manchester's public services – and over the future of matters such as transport, housing, policing and many other issues which touch every aspect of life for more than three million people. Campaigning has been underway for weeks, with seven candidates hoping to become Andy Burnham 's successor. The result of the election will be known on Friday (July 30). He returned to Parliament as an MP in June, before taking the keys to Number 10 Downing Street - and setting up Number 10 North - earlier this month.
