Heat-related ambulance calls nearly double in central Mississippi during July

A prolonged stretch of extreme heat is leading to a sharp increase in heat-related medical emergencies across central Mississippi. According to American Medical Response, ambulance crews responded to 24 patients suffering from hyperthermia or heat illness in July, nearly double the 13 cases reported in June. The average age of patients treated for heat illness also dropped from 54 years old in June to 45 years old in July, indicating the dangerous temperatures are affecting a broader range of people. AMR officials said the numbers likely underrepresent the true impact of the heat because they only include patients transported or treated by ambulance crews. Many people experiencing heat exhaustion seek medical care on their own or recover at home without calling 911. Emergency responders warn that symptoms of heat exhaustion can include dizziness, lightheadedness and confusion. A change in a person's level of consciousness can signal a medical emergency and should prompt an immediate call to 911. With dangerous heat continuing across Mississippi, health officials encourage residents to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks if working outdoors, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day and check on elderly neighbors and others who may be vulnerable to heat-related illness. Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention.
