How an 'ageing technophile' made the leap into the digital era

Orthodontist Dr. André Hugo shares his journey of transitioning his 42-year-old practice from analogue to digital systems. His experience serves as a case study for how healthcare professionals can embrace technology to improve efficiency.
Specialist orthodontist Dr André Hugo started practising 42 years ago in an era when artificial intelligence was still in the realms of science fiction. But his practice’s steady transformation from analogue to digital went on to become a teaching case at the UCT Business School. In the latest episode of Why Did I Become a Doctor , Hugo talks about his early scepticism of new technology and how he was won over by the efficiency of digitisation, from an online appointment system which he says was among the first to be adopted in South Africa, to pre-populated suggestion boxes. At 74, he is still practising and he remains more fascinated than threatened by fast-emerging new technology. MedicalBrief subscribers get early access to Hugo’s interview .
