If Orbital Data Centers Take Off, Brace For Giant Rings In The Night Sky

Astronomers are raising concerns that the deployment of millions of satellites for orbital data centers could create artificial rings around Earth. Experts warn that this massive increase in satellite infrastructure will significantly worsen light pollution and interfere with night sky observations.
<p>As companies race to build orbiting data centers, scientists are starting to warn the same systems could create giant rings of artificial satellites around Earth, altering the night sky with more light pollution. </p><p>"Here's the future that the techbros want. Earth as a ringed planet," <a href="https://mastodon.social/@sundogplanets/117043566081748429" target="_blank" title="(Opens in a new tab)"><u>posted</u></a> University of Regina astronomy professor Samantha Lawler.</p><p>Lawler has been among the astronomers raising the alarm bells when companies including SpaceX, Blue Origin and several startups <a href="https://www.pcmag.com/news/spacex-eyes-1-million-satellites-for-orbital-data-center-push" target="_self"><u>envision</u></a> sending up to over 1.2 million satellites for their orbital data center plans when combined together.</p><div class="mb-0 rounded-md bg-gray-100 p-3 md:p-5" id="related-video">
