Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere Have Heard It All Before

This month Ryan Murphy brings his adaptation of The Shards to FX, and for those still floating on the ’90s reverie of Love Story, his chronicle of the courtship, marriage, and tragic end of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, here is another occasion for sensory time travel, to a world even more pleasingly analog, with even tighter jeans. Ellis’s setting is Los Angeles in 1981, when the lives of a group of seniors at an elite private school are disrupted by a new student with a shadowy past. These kids are fast, weaving through the canyon in luxury cars, snorting cocaine, throwing sumptuous parties at their parents’ houses, peacocking, fornicating, clubbing, and country-clubbing. All the while, a serial killer known as the Trawler is targeting young women from the city’s wealthy neighborhoods.
