‘Large-scale incident’: Four injured in Hamilton knife attack

Police in Waikato are describing last night's stabbing of four people in Hamilton as a large-scale incident, spread over several properties. One person is in hospital with critical injuries, while two others suffered non-life-threatening but serious injuries. A fourth person has minor injuries. Inspector Karl Thornton says police were alerted to the incident on Churchill Ave in Maeroa just before 9pm on Saturday and arrested a 23-year-old man. Photo: RNZ Police said as the attack unfolded, one victim fled on foot to seek help at a nearby property and was followed there by the offender. It is alleged that an occupant there fired a gun, but caused no injury. Rhiannon Connor, who lives on Churchill Ave, said she had heard screaming on Saturday night as the incident unfolded. "I heard like bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, and I was like, holy f***, what's that?" Connor was worried the person would show up at her house next. Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident. Insp Thornton said residents could expect to see extra police in the area over the next few days.
