M62 motorway shut after serious incident overnight leaves car on its roof

A serious collision involving two cars has forced the closure of a section of the M62 motorway in Greater Manchester. Emergency services are on-site conducting investigations, and motorists are being diverted while debris is cleared.
A stretch of the M62 motorway remains closed on Sunday morning following a serious collision. Firefighters and police were called to a crash involving two cars late on Saturday night. It happened eastbound and led to a closure put in place between junction 20, for Thornham Interchange, and junction 22, for Denshaw, near Saddleworth . Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes where possible. Traffic reports said accident investigation work was being carried out between the A627(M) at Rochdale and the A672, for Rishworth Moor, with diversions in place. Images from the scene showed a car flipped over onto its roof on the carriageway. Traffic caught within the closure was turned around and released via the rear of the queue, National Highways said. A statement said: "The M62 in Greater Manchester is closed eastbound between J20 (Thornham Interchange) and J22 (Denshaw) due to a collision involving an overturned vehicle which occurred shortly after 11pm on July 11. "Emergency services are in attendance, along with National Highways Traffic Officers who are assisting with traffic management. " Greater Manchester Police are carrying out collision investigation work and the road is expected to remain closed for several hours. "Once investigation work is completed, there are also reports of a large amount of debris in the road with recovery expected to be protracted as well." Diversions are in place, with drivers urged to follow signs.
