Man fighting for life after stabbing on busy Manchester city centre street

A man is a critical condition in hospital after being stabbed in Manchester city centre . Police were on patrol on Peter Street, a busy street lined with bars and restaurants just off Deansgate , at around 3.40am this morning (Sunday, July 19) when they found the injured man. Officers found he had suffered stab wound injuries and gave him first aid. The 31-year-old was rushed to hospital from the scene. He is in a stable but critical condition, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said. The man who was stabbed is believed to have been the victim of a 'targeted attack'. No arrests have been made at this stage and an investigation into the incident is underway, with a scene remaining in place on Peter Street. In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "An investigation has been launched following an incident on Peter Street, Deansgate in the early hours of this morning (Sunday 19 July 2026). City of Manchester officers were on patrol at around 3.40am when they located a 31-year-old man with injuries consistent with a knife. "They swiftly administered first aid before he was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition. No arrests have been made and enquires are ongoing." Chief Inspector Mike Tachauer, of GMP’s City of Manchester Central team, said: “Whilst no arrests have been made, I’d like to reassure residents and the wider community that we believe this was a targeted attack and there is no wider threat to the community. Our investigation is working at pace to establish those responsible for this. "There is currently a scene in place around Peter Street and officers will continue to be in the area to provide reassurance."
