New Ferry Set to Unlock Tourism Potential on Tanzania’s Songosongo Island

A new Sh5.7 billion ferry under construction for Tanzania's Songosongo Island is expected to transform access to one of the country's most isolated coastal destinations. Currently, visitors can only reach the island by air, limiting tourism despite its luxury lodges, natural beauty and strategic location off the Lindi coast. Once operational, the modern ferry will provide a safe, reliable sea link, making the island more accessible to domestic and international travellers while reducing the risks associated with the small vessels currently used by residents.
