In 2019, scientists with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) released the first-ever image of a black hole . After years of gathering data from observatories worldwide, the world got a glimpse of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the center of the M87 galaxy, a super-giant elliptical galaxy about 53.5 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. Since then, follow-up observations have provided additional details and insight into the extreme physics of black holes.
