Scientists watched as the ocean split open, oozed 160 million cubic metres of lava

Scientists have captured rare, real-time data of a seafloor spreading event in the Indian Ocean, observing the release of 160 million cubic metres of lava. The study challenges the assumption that seafloor spreading is a slow, continuous process by showing significant geological changes can occur over just two weeks.
New Delhi: The ocean often comes apart at its ridges, spewing lava into the sea, but for the first time scientists have managed to witness this geological phenomenon using over 20 ocean measuring stations along a 100-km stretch of the Indian Ocean.
