Silver Ferns overcome Jamaica at Commonwealth Games

<p>Dame Noeline Taurua's side have beaten Jamaica's Sunshine Girls for the first time in almost four years, winning 53-48 in Glasgow.</p> <p>New Zealand were tested against Jamaica, a side boasting plenty of talent. But back in their black uniform, the Kiwis managed to maintain a narrow lead throughout.</p> <p>Coach Dame Noeline Taurua said the win was massive for the team's confidence.</p> <p>"We're progressing in the right direction," she said. </p> <p>"It was tough out there, defensively we knew they were going to be strong. We also had a bit of quiver on the way but to come out with the win is awesome."</p> <p>The Silver Ferns had a one goal lead going into the second half. The inclusion of Kimiora Poi at wing attack brought a point of difference and a calming presence.</p> <p>They'll surely want to minimise their error rate before heading into the business end of the tournament. Pre-match, coach Dame Noeline expected around 10 turnovers - the Ferns coughed up 16.</p> <p>A positive for the New Zealand side was the inclusion of Mila Reuelu-Buchanan in at wing defence. Normally a wing attack or centre, she played the entire match steering the defensive end.</p> <p>"She's new to that position but her personality suits wing defence," said Taurua.</p> <p>"She's a grafter, she's got the voice, she's like a halfback coming out of a scrum. She chats, she organises that front end. I thought she played well right through so she warranted to stay out there."</p> <p>The Silver Ferns' next match is against Uganda on Wednesday.</p>
