The niece of president Donald Trump , Mary Trump, has warned that his declining mental and physical state is revealing "more of who he has always been," as his alarming talk of restarting the war with Iran becomes ever more “unhinged”. Psychologist and author Mary Trump shared her fears surrounding her uncle’s health on a podcast with former CNN White House correspondent Jessica Yellin. She pointed to the “striking similarities” between her grandfather's behaviour as his Alzheimer's progressed and the current actions of her uncle Donald Trump. She said his increasingly violent language and knee-jerk actions represent a “frightening reality,” adding that people are using his impulsivity to “build the country they want”. "We’ve heard former supporters, including people like Marjorie Taylor Greene, say that Donald isn’t the same man they once knew. The truth is almost the opposite," Trump said. "Because of his cognitive and psychological decline, we’re actually seeing more of who he has always been. He’s simply no longer capable of hiding it as effectively as he once could." She added that the president, who is 80, has become "completely unhinged," referring to her alarm about his rhetoric about the war on Iran. Strikes continued overnight by US forces on Iranian targets as the Iranian military launched attacks on targets in the gulf including Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Hostilities have resumed after talks stalled, with Trump claiming his forces had forcibly reopened the Strait adding the US will be charging a toll for passing vessels. Meanwhile explosions have been reported on shipping in the strait. However unhinged Trump’s actions become, Mary Trump said, he continues to be enabled by his cronies, having surrounded himself with a core of "true believers" who may be willing to take things a step farther to "build exactly the country they want." "Those groups present different dangers, but together they’ve made Donald far more powerful than he ever could have become alone," Mary Trump said. Questions were raised over Trump's mental faculties last week after he seemingly became confused during a press conference when he spoke of attacks on the US Navy by the Islamic Republic of Japan . The befuddled leader was sitting across from Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky when he embarked on a rambling description of the latest hostilities in the Persian Gulf. Moments later the perplexed president seemingly mixed up Zelensky — who was sitting beside him — with his mortal enemy, Russian leader Vladimir Putin .
