Turning up the heaters: Freezing temps drive record power demand

<p>Electricity use has skyrocketed in recent weeks as the country plunged into a big winter chill, Transpower says. </p> <p>In a post online, the owner and operator of the country's national high-voltage electricity grid said the country recorded eight of the 10 highest electricity demand peaks in its history over the past two weeks. </p> <p>Transpower said average electricity use reached 7415MW during <a href="https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/08/06/cold-snap-pushes-nzs-electricity-use-to-record-high-for-second-day/" target="_blank">yesterday's peak</a>, surpassing Wednesday's record of 7247MW.</p> <p>This demand was driven by <a href="https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/08/05/couple-of-degrees-colder-severe-frosts-to-grip-new-zealand-tonight/" target="_blank">freezing temperatures</a> across Aotearoa. </p> <p>"Electricity supply was <a href="https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/08/06/temperatures-plunge-to-near-record-levels-as-cold-snap-digs-in/" target="_blank">particularly tight on Thursday</a> but, with a coordinated effort across the entire energy sector, we kept homes and businesses powered," a Transpower spokesperson said.</p> <p>"A huge thank you to generators for bringing additional generation online, large industrials that reduced their electricity use, local lines companies for being ready to manage hot water demand, and the many Transpower teams who worked behind the scenes to keep power flowing around the country."</p> <p>Earlier this week, the company put out a customer advice notice saying a national energy shortfall or low residual generation had been identified for various points. </p> <p>Executive general manager Chantelle Bramley said Transpower was "actively managing the tight balance between supply and demand during this cold snap".</p> <p>Record low temperatures were observed across parts of the central North Island in the past two days, MetService <a href="https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/08/07/taumarunui-rotorua-plunge-to-record-breaking-lows-metservice/" target="_blank">said earlier today</a>.</p> <p>The forecaster said Taumarunui recorded its coldest temperature on record at -7.2C, while Rotorua set a new all-time low of -5.6C.</p> <p>Taupō recorded its coldest August temperature on record at -6.6C. Palmerston North also set a new August record low of -3.5C, while Whangārei recorded its coldest August temperature at 0.4C.</p>
