Welsh music festival cancelled after teenager dies

An 18-year-old woman has died following a medical emergency at the Tonnau music festival in Wales. Police are investigating the death as unexpected and have requested that the public avoid speculation.
A teenager has died after being taken ill at a Welsh music festival. North Wales Police has confirmed officers were called to Tonnau festival at the Carreglwyd Estate on Anglesey at around 1.45am this morning, July 11, following reports of a medical emergency. An 18-year-old woman later died in hospital, the force said. Her death is being treated as unexpected whilst investigations are ongoing and the coroner has been informed, a spokeswoman said. Detective Inspector Iolo Edwards said: “Our thoughts remain with the woman’s family and loved ones at this difficult time. "We urge members of the public not to speculate on the circumstances of the death, and anybody with information that could assist our enquiries should contact us via our website or by calling 101, quoting reference O110259.” Tonnau Festival is held at Carreglwyd Estate on Llanfaethlu on Anglesey . It was due to run from Friday (July 10) to Sunday (July 12) and the line-up included Jamz Supernova, Mr Scruff, Pat Kalla & Le Super La Perla, Madalitso Band, Lamisi and K.O.G. It offers international bands and DJs, culture, food & drink spread over seven stages for 2,000 attendees. Its online description says it is an "unique and family-friendly event set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the best small independent festivals the UK has to offer". In a statement, the organisers said: "Everyone at Tonnau Festival is deeply saddened to confirm that a festival attendee tragically passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning following a severe medical emergency. "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the attendee’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. "From the moment the attendee became unwell, our on-site welfare teams, security, and emergency medical staff responded immediately. Paramedics and welfare personnel did everything they could to provide emergency care, but unfortunately they later died in hospital. "The safety and well-being of our audience is always our highest priority. Following this tragedy, and to allow emergency services and local authorities to conduct their necessary work, we made the decision to close the remainder of the festival and have asked people to vacate the site when it is safe for them to do so. We are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. "We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all our attendees, staff and volunteers during this incredibly difficult situation. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will be making no further comment at this time. "Our thoughts and hearts are with the family." Organisers have asked people to leave the site by midday on Sunday and said there will be no further admittance to the site. Ticket holders were emailed and told: "There was a medical incident last night (Friday) where an attendee was treated by the team onsite and transferred to hospital.. "While the exact details remain unclear, in order to protect your safety, we have had to take the very difficult decision to close the event. "There will be no further admittance to the site. We are asking all those who are able to leave the site to so as soon as possible. For those who are unable to travel tonight please leave the site by midday on Sunday." A limited food court will remain open but no bars will be open on the site and no further alcohol consumption is permitted, the message added.
