The wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was shot late Sunday night at the couple's home in Virginia. ESPN reporter Nate Taylor first wrote Monday morning that Mia Bieniemy, 57, had been hospitalized after an incident in Loudoun County, Virginia. ESPN said sources confirmed that a person was being treated for "serious injuries" but did not initially disclose the individual's identity. Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Leah Pau said one person was shot at a home in the One Loudoun neighborhood around 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening. Dispatch audio for an address linked to the Bieniemy family detailed the incident. According to dispatchers, a woman matching the age of Mia Bieniemy had been shot in the chest. The victim was conscious at the time but was struggling to breathe. Dispatch audio also states the victim was shot by her son. Loudoun County Jail records show an Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, was taken into custody Monday on offenses including malicious wounding and use of a firearm in a felony. The couple has two sons, Eric Bieniemy III and Elijah Bieniemy. Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman later confirmed Elijah Bieniemy's involvement and arrest to WJLA. Chapman also confirmed that the victim had been shot twice. Eric Bieniemy was with the Kansas City Chiefs at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Sunday, but Chapman said Monday afternoon that he was with his wife in the hospital. He also said he was not aware of any previous incidents at the home. Court documents detail injury A criminal complaint obtained by KMBC 9 accuses Elijah Bieniemy of shooting his mother with a Ruger .22 caliber firearm. As the sheriff confirmed Monday, court documents say Mia Bieniemy was shot two times, suffering injuries to her left forearm and left shoulder, with a projectile traveling across her chest. Mia Bieniemy required surgery for her injuries. Court documents say "a portion of the projectile" remained in her body. Chiefs reaction —'She's a saint' KMBC 9 News reached out to the Kansas City Chiefs for comment Monday morning. A team spokesperson said, "The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family. "Out of respect for their privacy, we won't have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them." Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke about the incident after practice Monday, calling the situation "fresh" and saying he learned about it Sunday evening. "I can't get into details, but things happen sometimes. Eric will work through it. He's got a great support group here, as does his family. We'll just let time take care of it from there," Reid said. "Mia is stable, which is a plus, and so is Eric Jr., and that's all important." Reid has known Mia Bieniemy and the Bieniemy family for years and said that the fact she is in stable condition is a positive. "She's a saint. We all know that, the people that know her. One of God's good blessings," Reid said. "But things happen, you know. Things happen. You've got to work through it. So that's where we're at right now. Time will have to be involved in this to help heal a little bit. So it'll all work out in the long run." Reid had no timeline for when Bieniemy would return for football duties, and he wasn't worried about that Monday morning. "Real life," he said when asked about his possible return. "So you take care of that, and that becomes important. ... The most important thing is that EB has an opportunity to spend some time and take care of that business."
