WWE Raw results and grades for July 6: CM Punk returns to take WWE title from Sami Zayn
AI Summary

CM Punk defeated Sami Zayn to win the Undisputed WWE Championship on Raw in Chicago after Cody Rhodes was sidelined by an attack from Gunther. The title change sets the stage for upcoming matches at the SummerSlam event in August.

Just over one week after Sami Zayn won the undisputed WWE championship, he dropped the title on Raw. Zayn was originally scheduled to defend the title against the man he took the title from, Cody Rhodes, but at the end of the night, it was CM Punk who was raising the title belt.Gunther took out Rhodes early in the night, leaving Raw general manager Adam Pearce scrambling for a replacement challenger as he is also the temporary SmackDown GM. In the end, Punk was the surprise opponent and won the title in his hometown of Chicago.Punk now holds a world championship ahead of the coming SummerSlam event on Aug. 1 and 2.CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Allstate Arena in Chicago.CM Punk wins the undisputed WWE championship from Sami ZaynSami Zayn came face-to-face with Cody Rhodes backstage to open the show. After the pair traded a few words ahead of their main event match for the undisputed WWE championship Zayn won from Rhodes at Night of Champions, Rhodes was attacked by Gunther. Gunther put Rhodes through a table before kicking a car door into Rhodes' head. Later, it was confirmed Rhodes was no longer medically cleared to compete. Zayn tried to hide his joy at the news, but was told by Raw general manager Adam Pearce that he would defend his title anyway. He was not told who the opponent would be, as Pearce spent the rest of the night on his phone trying to find the right challenger for the title.Undisputed WWE Championship -- CM Punk def. Sami Zayn (c) via pinfall to win the title. Punk was the not-so-surprising challenger in his hometown of Chicago. After a solid back-and-forth match, Punk used Zayn's own Helluva Kick to set up a match-ending Go To Sleep to win the title just over a week after Zayn claimed it.Zayn's title reign was, unsurprisingly, something more of a "career achievement award" than an actual run as champion. Needing big matches for SummerSlam, it wasn't surprising to see the belt ripped from his waist as quickly as it was. Punk and Rhodes had already teased a big match in the past, and there was electricity in their face-to-face at that time, so it seems as though it's the natural move for SummerSlam. The match was solid, and Punk winning the title in Chicago is always fun, but it's hard not to feel a little bad for Zayn for having a truly insignificant title reign that will serve as little more than a footnote. Grade: B+What else happened on WWE Raw?Seth Rollins cut a promo about his match with Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. After discussing his history with Reigns in The Shield, and Reigns being pegged as WWE's "golden boy," LA Knight cut off Rollins. Rollins complimented Knight and said that Knight could have the first crack at him after he wins the world heavyweight championship from Reigns. After Rollins left the ring, Jimmy Uso attacked Knight from behind, delivering a superkick. Knight tried to confront Uso later in the night but was put down by Jacob Fatu.World Tag Team Championship -- The Vision (Bron Breakker & Austin Theory) def. The Street Profits (Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins) (c) via pinfall to win the titles. Before the match, Paul Heyman told The Vision that they needed to bring back something worthy of being advised by "The Wiseman" or not come back at all. Logan Paul attempted to introduce multiple brass knuckles at ringside, but both attempts failed. Then, Maxxine Dupri hit Dawkins with a low blow, allowing Theory to get the pin and win the titles. After the match, Dupri and Theory kissed, cementing her heel turn even further. Heyman then said, "At least someone got something accomplished today," before pointing out that he was talking about Dupri.Women's Intercontinental Championship -- Sol Ruca (c) def. Raquel Rodriguez via pinfall with a Sol Snatcher to retain the title. Roxanne Perez and Liv Morgan attempted to interfere to help Rodriguez win, but Iyo Sky ran in to deal with the interference, and Ruca put Rodriguez down in the confusion.Paul Heyman and Oba Femi exchanged words about Femi's SummerSlam Hell in a Cell match with Lesnar, with Femi promising to end Lesnar's story because Lesnar's time has ended while Femi's has just began.Ethan Page & Rusev def. Chad Gable & Dragon Lee via submission when Rusev forced Lee to tap to the Accolade. Page and Rusev continued to attack after the match until Joe Hendry ran in. Hendry fought off Page and Rusev briefly, before the tables turned and he also ended up in the Accolade.
