WWE Saturday Night's Main Event results, grades, analysis: Nick Aldis helps CM Punk, Cody Rhodes beat Gunther

WWE Saturday Night's Main Event returned to Madison Square Garden and delivered a show that resulted in a title change and had arguably the best SNME match since the series made its return in 2024.The last major event before WWE SummerSlam takes over Minnesota next month, Saturday’s four-match card was headlined by a massive main-event tag match pitting Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk and his SummerSlam foe, Cody Rhodes, against Sami Zayn and Gunther. It was a fast-paced match that delivered in every way possible, including setting up a likely match between Gunther and SmackDown GM Nick Aldis, whose interference helped Punk and Rhodes secure a win and keep their SummerSlam match one-on-one for the time being. Thanks to involvement from Jacy Jayne, Lainey Reid and Fallon Henley captured their first championships since being called up to “SmackDown” earlier this year. It's unlikely we're done with this rivalry, with the nature of the match opening up a potential avenue for Nikki Bella to return for a SummerSlam match, pending her recovery from an ankle injury.In undeniably the most fun — and viral match of the night — New York Knicks cult hero Danhausen enlisted the help of actual Knicks hero Karl-Anthony Towns (and some MiniHausens) to defeat JD McDonagh and finally vanquish the Judgment Day. Reigns presented Brunson with a custom championship belt before Seth Rollins' music hit and Tyrese Haliburton emerged as a distraction. The victory was welcome, especially after Jayne was defeated on “SmackDown” and cost a chance to battle for the interim WWE Women's Championship at SummerSlam.The outcome of this match — which was the right one for all parties — helps put Jayne's loss into a little more perspective as we could see a trios match at SummerSlam if Nikki Bella is back from her ankle injury. After the Women's Tag Team Championship picture was a major bright spot in 2025, things slowed a bit in 2026, but Fatal Influence could be the spark the division needs for a second-half revival.Danhausen def. JD McDonagh in 11:33Grade: B+Best spot: Karl-Anthony Towns getting involvedAnalysis: Sometimes giving us exactly what is expected is the best possible thing, and a perfect example came in the form of this very fun, very entertaining match. Judgment Day have been excellent in their roles here as Danhausen's foils and hopefully this marks the end of their involvement with him, especially for Mysterio, whose rise has seemingly stalled out in recent months. As for Danhausen, as predictable as his match formula has become, it works — remarkably well. The inclusion of Karl-Anthony Towns drew a huge pop from the MSG crowd and the big man looked very comfortable in delivering two huge chokeslams. The grade here isn't a reflection of the match being a technical masterpiece, rather it being the perfect dose of entertainment that makes pro-wrestling such a unique medium.Lyra Valkyria def. Bayley via submission in 10:29Grade: BBest spot: Lyra Valkyria attacking Bayley after the matchJust speechless...Lyra Valkyria has absolutely DESTROYED Bayley. 😔 pic.twitter.com/O1nnwQgXJy— WWE (@WWE) July 19, 2026 Analysis: The early portions of this match were impacted after Bayley inadvertently busted Lyra Valkyria open with an elbow strike. Once Valkyria recovered and the bleeding was under control, the action picked up considerably, which was expected between these two. The story these two have shared for the past year demanded a physical match and it's what they delivered, with Valkyria unveiling some new offense as part of her revamped, unhinged character. Valkyria picking up the win here — and the subsequent attack on Bayley after the match — goes a long way in helping her recapture the momentum she had early in 2025 as part of the Women's Intercontinental Championship scene. She should immediately launch into a program with Sol Ruca coming out of this. As for Bayley, it's likely we'll see her take some time away from “Raw,” which could be a good reset and help her come back to the main-event level on the women's side.Cody Rhodes and CM Punk def. This match was able to successfully build the tension between Punk and Rhodes, set up a likely SummerSlam showdown between Gunther and Nick Aldis, further Sami Zayn's character development and overcome a last-minute stipulation that made it seem likely the heels would win — not an easy needle to thread. The biggest takeaways here are tied to the losing team, Gunther and Zayn. Gunther is almost certainly going to face Aldis in Minnesota — perhaps with a retirement stipulation on the line for the “SmackDown” GM. While Zayn has a legitimate gripe and claim to be added to the SummerSlam match between Punk and Rhodes, it will be interesting to see if WWE pulls the trigger there or has Zayn simmer a bit for either a feud coming out of the event or for a possible Money in the Bank win. “SmackDown” instantly becomes a lot more interesting coming out of this event.For complete coverage of Saturday Night's Main Event, follow along with Uncrowned's live blog below:
