WWE SummerSlam Night 1 results, grades, analysis: Oba Femi conquers Brock Lesnar in brutal torch-passing; Punk retains, Orton returns

WWE SummerSlam 2026, WWE's second-biggest annual show, kicked off Saturday night at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The six-match card featured two championship contests, but neither title changed hands on a night that was defined by the return of a legend and the crowning of WWE's next big star.The weekend began with a bang as Women's World Champion Liv Morgan and Iyo Sky set the bar remarkably high with one of WWE's best women's matches of the year. For the men, LA Knight, Solo Sikoa and Royce Keys defeated The Usos and Jacob Fatu. While it was a seemingly thrown together trio, Knight and Sikoa are super over with fans and warrant consideration as a legitimate tag-team. On the women's side, Fatal Influence defeated Paige and the Bella Twins. Morgan and Sky put on one of the best women's matches in WWE this year, solidifying Morgan's Women's World Champion's reign and potentially setting up a rubber match between the two for later in the year. Shoot, you could carry this feud all the way to 2027 and center the women's WarGames match around these two as well. If a third showdown isn't immediately in the cards, Morgan still has unfinished business with Stephanie Vaquer — whenever she returns — and Sky has a legitimate beef with new Women's Intercontinental Champion Raquel Rodriguez. There still aren't a wealth of options on the "Raw" roster, but Morgan and Sky showed quality is better than quantity at the moment.LA Knight, Solo Sikoa and Royce Keys def. Sikoa and Knight both got major reactions from the Minnesota crowd and Royce Keys' ascent continues on "SmackDown." As for the Usos and Jacob Fatu, it'll be hard to really predict what happens with them until we know the outcome of Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins on Sunday night. Jey Uso taking the pin could put an easy target on his back as the odd man out, if The Bloodline decides to cut ties with someone.Overall, a very fun match and a good showcase for the babyface team.Gunther def. He went toe-to-toe with Gunther and the crowd was heavily behind him, but ultimately tapping out was the right call here. While it wasn't immediately clear if this was Aldis' last match, him losing here makes it hard to see an in-ring path forward outside of one-off appearances at major PLEs. Post-event, Triple H rejected Aldis' letter of resignation and reinstated him as "SmackDown" general manager.For Gunther, he picks up another significant win to build his reputation as the "Career Killer," even if it doesn't get him any closer to the Undisputed WWE Championship. At this point, Gunther should be a prime candidate to win the men's Money in the Bank ladder match.Fatal Influence def. Paige and The Bella Twins in 7:30Grade: CBest spot: Hot tag to Nikki BellaAnalysis: Fatal Influence picks up a relatively significant win here, having now defeated the legends in major tag matches twice in as many months. It'll be a good talking point for the young trio as they continue to find their footing on "SmackDown."The after-match turn on Paige looked like it was designed to set up a heel Bellas tag run, but it looked like Brie suffered a shoulder injury taking a gnarly looking cannonball against the steel steps. If she's out for an extended period, Nikki can have a singles program with Paige and Fatal Influence can look elsewhere for rivals for their Women's Tag Team Championships. Cody Rhodes in 29:43 to retain the Undisputed WWE ChampionshipGrade: BBest spot: Randy Orton's returnAnalysis: The longest match of the night went pretty heavy on the storytelling, with both Punk and Rhodes selling injuries during the early portion of the match, which admittedly felt like it dragged a bit. Once things kicked into high gear, this became a very strong contest with high stakes, high spots and high drama. Ultimately — as Drake Riggs called in our preview — Randy Orton factored into the finish, costing Rhodes the win, setting up the next feud for "The American Nightmare" and protecting him in the process. Outside of a misguided moonsault and awkward landing on a big elbow through the announce table, Punk looked very good. We'll know more about his next opponent after the No. 1 contender's match between Finn Balor and Sami Zayn Sunday night. Instead, we got two absolute behemoths going blow-for-blow inside the structure. This match was exactly what it needed to be and was a justified choice to close out the show. Lesnar looked as strong as ever and Femi was given a mountain to overcome, which he did. Femi is a made man. Lesnar even dubbed him "the future of WWE" after the match. Femi cannot be put into the World Heavyweight Championship picture fast enough.
