WWE SummerSlam Night 2 results, grades, analysis: Roman Reigns vanquishes Seth Rollins in instant classic; 3 new champs crowned

WWE SummerSlam is in the books. After Saturday's Night 1 saw no new champions crowned, three of the four titles on the line in Sunday's Night 2 changed hands on a memorable show that opened with one of the biggest returns in recent WWE history and closed with an instant-classic main event.The night started off with a bang as newly reinstated "SmackDown" general manager Nick Aldis added Gunther and — in the biggest surprise of the night — a returning Kevin Owens to the Undisputed WWE Championship No. 1 contender match between Sami Zayn and Finn Balor. Despite being out for well over a year, Owens showed little signs of rust and wound up winning the match, setting up a future clash with CM Punk.SummerSlam ended on an impressive high note as Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins put together a 33-minute, epic main event that served as the closing chapter in a saga that has spanned more than a decade. Reigns was able to defeat Rollins to retain his World Heavyweight Championship, and afterward the former Shield members shared a special moment in the ring, burying the hatchet. Newly returned Baron Corbin used the title itself to gain an advantage and defeat Trick Williams, setting up a potential rematch between the two "SmackDown" stars. In the penultimate match of the night, Chad Gable completed his quest for singles gold as he defeated Penta to win the Intercontinental Championship in his hometown and in front of his family.Finally, Danhausen, with the help of Minihausens and Joe Hendry, continued to torment the Judgment Day by defeating Dominik Mysterio in a "Human Monies on a Pole" match. It was a genuinely feel-good moment, considering the severity of his neck injury and intensity of the recovery Owens faced. As soon as the match started, any question of rust was immediately dispelled as Owens unleashed two Swantons, the second of which was picture-perfect.The match itself was remarkably fast-paced and technically sound, which shouldn't be a surprise considering the four men involved. While each man got a chance to shine, the inclusion of Gunther and Owens made it relatively clear that neither Balor nor Zayn were walking out of SummerSlam as the No. 1 contender — and in Zayn's case, he wound up taking the pin from Owens. Owens immediately moves to the front of the line to face CM Punk, while both Zayn and Gunther have legitimate gripes with Nick Aldis.As for Balor, despite his momentum in 2026, a loss here leaves him a bit directionless, but he could easily slot in any role WWE has for him.Baron Corbin def. Trick Williams in 9:10 to win the United States ChampionshipGrade: BBest spot: Baron Corbin hitting Deep SixAnalysis: This match was in an unenviable spot on the card, following up a major surprise and banger of an opener. That said, Trick Williams and Baron Corbin have good chemistry together and the finish here protects Williams, providing him a clear path for a rematch — potentially with a street fight stipulation at WWE's next PLE. What shouldn't be a surprise is the reaction of the crowd to Green during this match and when she actually won. The action itself was solid, with some really impressive spots — particularly from Stratton, who looked the best out of all of the women in this match. Yet even with stars who had more proven track records, a hometown favorite and potential future champion in the mix, no one was as over as Green was in this contest. Ironically, the new champion may have the most unclear future of anyone involved here. Legend and Stratton should immediately feud for the Women's U.S. Championship, while Cargill and Flair will continue their ongoing feud, which doesn't need a championship attached to it.Green being in this spot gives her an opportunity to either transition the championship to a new face or hold it long enough to go up against Rhea Ripley whenever Ripley is cleared to return. Danhausen def. It was all fine, but I'm not sure we're going to see any deviation in this formula for Danhausen singles matches — he's too popular to change anything. The interesting wrinkle here will be whether, after Joe Hendry's run-in, do we see a tag titles chase for him and Danhausen?On Mysterio and the Judgment Day's side, let's hope this is the end of their involvement with Danhausen and they can get back to being in the mix for tag or singles titles.The star of this match was ToritoHausen, who pulled off impressive move after impressive move. Kudos to him.Chad Gable def. Penta via submission in 11:07 to win the Intercontinental ChampionshipGrade: B+Best spot: Gable's German suplex onto the ring apronAnalysis: Expectations were high coming into this match and while it wasn't the best match of the weekend, it was a very solid contest between two stars who fit the Intercontinental Championship mold perfectly. This match is PHYSICAL 👊 pic.twitter.com/mOuLsBC8ik— WWE (@WWE) August 2, 2026 Although the match didn't necessarily need it, Penta and Gable worked in strong storytelling with a callback to Gable's shoulder injury and Penta immediately targeting it. The action was fast-paced and mostly clean — save for a Mexican Destroyer attempt on the ring apron.Gable winning was the obvious right call and he got a heartwarming moment with Penta and then his family after the match. The Intercontinental Championship picture is in good hands moving forward.As for Penta, he's as close to a lock as there should be for the Money in the Bank ladder match and a potential dark horse winner there.Roman Reigns def. Seth Rollins in 33:31 to retain the World Heavyweight ChampionshipGrade: ABest spot: Reigns tossing away the steel chairAnalysis: What an incredible way to close out the show. Rollins and Reigns showed why they have defined the past decade of WWE by putting on an epic main event that felt like the closing chapter in an all-time rivalry. Between the callbacks to their time together with The Shield, the homages to Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley) and stealing one another's moves, the storytelling here was as good as it gets — and I haven't even mentioned Reigns tossing away the steel chair in the closing moments of the match. But overall, this match was the best of the weekend and deserves to be in the discussion for Match of the Year. From here, Reigns should have a date with Oba Femi and, quite frankly, should break from The Usos and Jacob Fatu, especially after their loss on Night 1. For Rollins, although he made peace with Reigns after the match, there was a moment of pause at the top of the ramp as the match went off the air.
